I discovered the idea of Dictionary Art Journaling after watching a YouTube video. The idea is to choose a word on a page of the dictionary, and then highlight it and illustrate it. A perfect art project for someone like me, who loves words. (Remember, puns are my favorite type of joke.) Plus, I’ve been collecting vintage dictionaries for years.
As usual with a new art project, I’m a little obsessed with it. I’m having fun doodling and trying new techniques.
Here are some of my favorites:
My dictionary is a large 1955 Webster’s, and it’s perfect. Found it at a thrift shop for $2.
I started by applying gesso to the pages; however, I found it wasn’t needed. I’ve been using Tim Holtz Distress Inks to watercolor the images with great results! A sharpie or sakura micron permanent pen works well.
There’s a Facebook group you can join to share your work, and get inspired. You can find it here.
